SDSU Goes 2-0 at Palm Desert
(from a San Diego State press release)
PALM DESERT, Calif. -- The No. 23 San Diego State men’s lacrosse team enjoyed a successful weekend at the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament in Palm Desert this past weekend.
After a hard fought win against Utah Valley on Friday, the Aztecs had a quick turnaround taking on No. 10 Oregon State on Saturday. The team came out and jumped on the Beavers, taking a 4-1 lead with goals by Will Mallonnee (2), Adrian Jefferies and Patrick Greene.
The Beavers battled back in the second quarter, closing the gap to 5-4 at the half. A penalty to end the half forced the Aztecs to start the second half man-down. SDSU came up with a huge stop, which led to a man-down goal with defenseman Colin McMahon going coast to coast.
Both teams traded goals in the third quarter, with the Aztecs taking an 8-6 advantage into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, Steve O’Sullivan shined, making point blank saves and the SDSU defense turned back a surging OSU offense on several late possessions.
Adrian Jefferies scored a late goal to take a 9-6 lead that would prove to be the final score in the upset.
Jefferies led all scorers with three goals while Mallonnee and Greene each chipped in two goals. Troy Cummings added two goals and an assist in the victory. Freshman goalie Steve O’Sullivan was outstanding in net, making 25 saves on the day.
The Aztecs will now open up SLC league play hosting No. 17 Arizona on Saturday, March 11 at 1p.m.
