Simon Fraser Tames Aztecs

SAN DIEGO -- No. 19 Simon Fraser (4-1) traveled to San Diego State (2-3) on Saturday night and managed to escape with a 9-8 victory.
The game started off with San Diego State scoring on the first possession on a substitution situation. Freshman attackman Brady Burwell found senior attackman Will Mallonee on the back side to go up 1-0.
Simon Fraser answered right back with a goal in early offense. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the first half with neither team leading by more than one.
The Clan scored a highlight reel goal at the buzzer to take a 7-6 lead into half time.
In the third quarter, neither team gave up much.
Fraser got on the board first to take the biggest lead of the game, but the Aztecs answered right back when Niko Vlassis dodged the alley to bring the score back within one.
The Clan was able to answer with a goal in transition to finish the quarter with a 9-7 lead.
Ben Borglin found the net early in the fourth to bring the Aztecs back within one goal. San Diego State dominated possession time and were able to keep Simon Fraser off the scoreboard in the final quarter.
In the final minute, SFU called time out and the Aztecs were able to cause a turnover to get one last chance on offense. SDSU had several scoring chances in the final minute, but could not beat the SFU goaltender.
Sophomore midfielder Patrick Green got back to his 2017 form, scoring five goals for the Aztecs. Sophomore FOGO Owen Schnur won 11-of-19 faceoffs while scooping three groundballs. Rookie goalie Kendall Dizon made five saves in the second half, turning away several point blank saves.
The Aztecs are home again this Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m. when they face No. 1 Grand Canyon. It will be the first SLC conference game for both teams.
